In a recent report, The Evening Standard stated that Newcastle United are showing interest in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are eyeing a move to acquire the services of the English sensation.
Gallagher’s Growing Frustrations At West London
Gallagher is having a frustrating season at Stamford Bridge as he has struggled to find consistency with his performances at the centre of the park. The 23-year-old has scored one goal and grabbed one assist in 35 matches for the Blues during this campaign across various competitions.
The English talent has made most of his appearances off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 0.7 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He has been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after making 82.3% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Stamford Bridge will run out in the summer of 2025. Thus, Newcastle will find it difficult to sign him at the end of this season.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Get Gallagher On Board?
Gallagher is a solid tackler of the ball and can make some timely interceptions for his team at the centre of the park. He can strike the ball with venom from long range and can engineer some clear-cut chances for his teammates in the opponent’s half when he is playing with confidence on the field.
The English talent can even make some driving runs with the ball from midfield. However, things have just not fallen in place for him at Stamford Bridge this season.
Therefore, Newcastle would be wise to test Chelsea’s resolve by making a move for Gallagher during this summer transfer period. He will add more energy and dynamism to Eddie Howe’s midfield at St. James’ Park and could help the Magpies compete across all competitions over the next few years.
