According to a report from Manchester Evening News, Manchester City are interested in signing Benjamin Pavard of Bayern Munich amid concerns over his long-term future at the club. It is understood that the 27-year-old is set to set to enter the final 12 months of his current contract this summer.
Pavard’s Impressive Numbers For Bayern Munich So Far This Season
Pavard is having a decent campaign at the Allianz Arena as he managed to produce a handful of impressive displays on the right side of Bayern’s defence. The 27-year-old has been involved in 31 matches for the Bavarian giants so far this season, scoring six goals and securing an assist in all competitions.
The French talent has been a solid defender at the back after averaging 2.3 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 2.2 clearances, 0.9 shots and 0.7 key passes per game in the Bundesliga. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball based on his pass completion rate of 89.3% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Is Pavard A Decent Fit For Manchester City?
Pavard is a solid tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his side when defending inside his half. He usually clears the danger when the opposition is on the front foot.
The Frenchman can shoot the ball well from long range and can orchestrate some decent chances for his teammates up top. He hardly gives away the ball cheaply, which makes him one of the most reliable performers in Bayern’s defensive department. Furthermore, Pavard is primarily a right-back but can also fill in as a left-back or operate as a centre-back if required.
The Sky Blues have always lacked in the full-back positions. The situation at the Etihad Stadium is dire, with Joao Cancelo’s future uncertain at the club and Kyle Walker struggling with his form. If Cancelo decides to make his move permanent with the German giants, then Guardiola can definitely plan a move for Pavard, as he could sign him for a cut-price fee or even arrange a swap transfer in the process.
Therefore, it is only logical for Pep Guardiola to move in for him this summer. The Mancunian giants can definitely use someone with Pavard’s skillset to strengthen their backline ahead of the new campaign.
