In a recent interview with Caughtoffside, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool are in pole position to land Chelsea talent Mason Mount. Romano said,
“Despite reported interest from Arsenal in Mason Mount, Liverpool remain the favourites for the Chelsea midfielder as they consider Mount one of the priorities.
“But it all depends on Chelsea new deal negotiations and also the Chelsea manager situation. I think it’s not about Champions League football, it’s about the project; the real timing for Mount decision will be May/June, not now for sure.”
Mount’s Up And Down Season At Stamford Bridge
Mount is having a tough campaign at the West London club as he has struggled to prove his worth as a consistent performer over the past eight months. The Portsmouth deserves some credit for scoring three goals and picking up six assists in 35 appearances for Chelsea this season on all fronts.
The 24-year-old has caught the eye at times for the Blues based on his average of 1.4 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He has even been excellent when distributing possession in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 80.1% in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Will Mount Bring To Liverpool?
Mount can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from long range and has got the vision to create some inviting chances for his teammates on the attacking third of the pitch. He is also quite clever with his movements in and around the opposition penalty box.
The English sensation mainly functions as an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or as a left-sided wide player if needed.
We can expect Mount to bring some goals and creativity to Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp‘s attack. He could even serve as an ideal replacement for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who has endured an injury-plagued spell at the Merseyside club. At 24, his best years are ahead of him.
With all things considered, Mount will be an excellent option for the Reds to pursue during this summer transfer period as he could help them secure a top-four spot and maybe even challenge for a major trophy or two next season.
