In a recent print edition, Het Nieuwsblad stated that Everton midfielder Amadou Onana is on the radar of Chelsea. It has been claimed that the Blues are hoping to move in for the Belgian midfielder after failing to sign him from the Toffees in January.
Onana’s Impressive Form At Merseyside This Season
Onana is having a solid campaign at Goodison Park despite failing to help the Merseyside club be consistent in the Premier League. The 21-year-old has found the back of the net once and registered one assist in 29 appearances for the Toffees this season across all fronts.
The Belgian sensation has been a reliable performer at the heart of Everton’s midfield based on his average of 2.3 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.1 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution after completing 83.7% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Merseyside outfit is set to run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, there is no immediate need for Everton to let him go in this off-season.
Should Everton Boss Sean Dyche Cut Onana Loose?
Onana is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his team at the centre of the park. He usually clears the danger when needed and can strike the ball with power from close range.
The Belgian midfield ace can also make some driving runs with the ball. He has got the vision to engineer a few decent chances for his teammates in the final third.
Onana is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or as a centre-back if his manager asks him to do so. He is currently one of the most important members of Sean Dyche’s starting XI.
Therefore, the Everton head coach simply cannot afford to cut Onana loose this summer. He is a player on the rise and would only get better in the coming seasons.
The Toffees should rather focus on keeping hold of him for the long run as he has the potential to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League someday.
