In a recent report, The Daily Mail claimed that Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It has been revealed that the Magpies are showing interest in recruiting the English talent during the summer transfer window.
Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Disappointing Season At Merseyside
Oxlade-Chamberlain is having an underwhelming campaign at Anfield as he has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot in Jurgen Klopp’s first XI. The 29-year-old has found the back of the net just once in 12 appearances for the Reds this season in all competitions.
The England international has struggled to perform at a high level and is only averaging 0.9 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in Premier League football. He has distributed possession relatively well in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 76.3% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Oxlade-Chamberlain’s current deal at the Merseyside club is set to run out in the summer. Thus, the Magpies could sign him on a free transfer at the end of this campaign.
Will Oxlade-Chamberlain Be A Good Choice For Newcastle United Head Coach Eddie Howe?
Oxlade-Chamberlain can strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range and has got the vision to create some good opportunities for his teammates to score. He is a decent dribbler with the ball as well but is in dire need of finding more consistency with his contributions in the final third. Oxlade-Chamberlain has mainly functioned as a box-to-box midfielder for Liverpool of late but can also fill in as a wide player on either flank if required.
The England international has got a wealth of experience in Premier League football and won’t take any time to settle into life at Newcastle United if Eddie Howe opts to snap him up when he becomes a free agent later this summer.
At 29, Oxlade-Chamberlain is currently in his prime but has got a poor injury history. Still, he will be available on a free transfer and would undoubtedly add more depth to the Tyneside club‘s squad. With all things considered, the Liverpool playmaker will be a decent choice for the Magpies to pursue at the end of this campaign.
