In a recent report, The Telegraph claimed that Newcastle United are planning to move in for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are hoping to secure the services of the Scottish midfield ace after failing to land him in January.
McTominay’s Decent Form At Old Trafford
McTominay is having a solid campaign at the Mancunian club and has been responsible for putting in a run of dominant displays at the heart of Erik ten Hag’s midfield. The 26-year-old has featured in 32 matches for Man United this season, netting two goals and picking up one assist in multiple competitions.
The Lancaster-born talent has anchored the midfield with conviction based on his average of 1.4 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 2.1 clearances per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He is usually careful when distributing the ball from the back after making 83.3% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Old Trafford is set to run out in the summer of 2025. Thus, the Magpies would have to launch a sizable offer if they want to bring McTominay to Tyneside in the summer.
Is McTominay A Decent Option For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
McTominay is a tough-tackling midfielder who can sense the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his side at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and is a hard-working player at both ends of the field. However, the Scottish sensation has to find a way to improve his offensive numbers in the future.
We can expect McTominay to inject more bite and steel into Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s midfield department and help the Magpies challenge for some top honours in the coming seasons.
McTominay recently tasted success with Man United in the Carabao Cup and could instil a winning mentality in Newcastle‘s dressing room. He is good enough to compete with Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock for a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park. At 26, McTominay has his best years ahead of him which makes him a good fit for the Tyneside club this summer as long as they can get him for a fair price.
