According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester City are reportedly showing keen interest in Victor Osimhen of Napoli despite having Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez. It has been mentioned that the Sky Blues have contacted the Serie A side asking about the availability of their Nigerian striker. It is understood that Chelsea and Manchester United have also registered their interest in the forward, but the City board are looking to swoop in this summer.
Osimhen’s Impressive Numbers In Serie A This Season
Osimhen has been enjoying a rich run of form at the Naples club as he has put in a lot of productive performances as the focal point of their attack. The Nigerian sensation has made 26 appearances for his current employers this season, netting 21 goals and grabbing three assists in the process across various competitions.
The 24-year-old has led the line well for Napoli by averaging 4.3 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game in Serie A football. However, he has to find a way to improve his link-up play in the final third after completing only 72.4% of his attempted passes in the Italian top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Guardiola Bring Him To Manchester City?
The Nigerian forward has taken European football by storm with his incredible performances for both club and country. He remains a natural goal-scorer with an innate ability to find the back of the net. Osimhen can outpace defenders with ease, which enables him to exploit spaces behind the opposition’s backline and stretch the opposition. Furthermore, he possesses excellent physical attributes, standing at 1.85 meters, which makes him a dominant presence in the opposition’s penalty area.
While Osimhen’s attacking prowess is undoubtedly his most notable attribute, the forward’s work rate and defensive contributions can not be overlooked as well. His arrival at the Etihad Stadium would bring immense competition to the frontline and add more firepower to their attack. The possibility of Haaland and Osimhen forming a lethal two-man strike team will surely frustrate City’s competitors.
Pep Guardiola should definitely look at acquiring his signature at the end of this season if the Italian side are willing to sanction his exit. However, the Mancunian giants would have to agree to their terms and pay a massive fee in order to bring him aboard.
