Liverpool are having a dreadful run after a near-perfect 2021-22 season. The star players have largely underperformed across the pitch and the owners must splash the cash in the summer window to recover last ground.
They also might have to offload a few names to generate funds, and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher could be one of them as suggested by the former Arsenal and France midfield ace Emmanuel Petit while speaking to The Irish Post.
The Reds have certain limitations in the defensive third, midfield as well as high up the pitch. But they still have an edge over the other Premier League clubs between the sticks.
Despite his costly error against Real Madrid, Alisson Becker has saved them from humiliation time and again. The 30-year-old Brazilian is at his peak and Kelleher, already in his mid-twenties, should find a new destination with guaranteed minutes.
The Republic of Ireland international missed some first-team opportunities due to injury woes, but he won’t get many in the red half of Merseyside as the understudy to Alisson. With just 20 senior outings in four years, Kelleher must feel frustrated given his potential. He scored the winning penalty in the sudden death to conquer the 2022 EFL Cup, however, Liverpool’s early Cup exits restricted his appearances to three games so far this term.
Petit wants him to ply his trade in London amid the goalkeeper conundrum at Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. But he prefers the latter for a specific reason.
“A club that he would fit in perfectly is Tottenham. Hugo Lloris is 36, he has had a few injuries and has retired from the national team, he is not the future anymore. Foster is also 34, so Tottenham may need a refresh in that department. If he wants to cement his own legacy, he should leave and join Tottenham.”
Why Liverpool Should Sanction His Exit
Meanwhile, Liverpool are likely to let Adrian leave on a Bosman once his contract expires in June. Although the 36-year-old Spaniard helped them win the Community Shield by defeating Manchester City in the season opener, Jurgen Klopp must opt for a more regular option to deputise Alisson with both Adrian and Kelleher likely to depart. Either he should explore the free-agent pool or rope in someone who has a humble valuation.
Liverpool must concentrate on bolstering themselves in the centre of the pitch and the exit of Kelleher would be a win-win deal for all parties involved.
