In a recent report, The Dailly Mail provided an update on the future of Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez. It has been claimed that the Villans are willing to entertain offers for the Argentine custodian in the summer.
Martinez’s Impressive Form This Season
Martinez is enjoying a decent campaign in both club and international football after recently helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy in Qatar.
The 30-year-old has managed to produce some solid displays in goal for the Villans despite struggling to help them be consistent in the Premier League. Martinez has conceded 28 goals and secured five assists in 21 matches for the West Midlands club this season across multiple competitions.
The Argentine custodian has done well to average 0.6 clearances and 6.2 long balls per game in Premier League football. However, he needs to work on improving his ball distribution after making just 71.9% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
What Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Do With Regards To Martinez?
Martinez can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks as he has got decent reflexes under his belt that help him pull off a few important saves at the back. He is a solid handler of the ball and doesn’t hesitate to come out of his six-yard box to collect crosses and loose balls when needed.
The Argentina international has built a reputation for being a great penalty shot-stopper and is currently amongst the best goalkeepers in Premier League football. However, he has to find a way to improve his passing accuracy if he wants to taste more success at the highest level.
His current contract at Villa Park is set to expire in the summer of 2027. Thus, there is no immediate need for Aston Villa boss Unai Emery to cash in on Martinez in the summer.
The West Midlands club would be better off keeping hold of him for as long as they can as he remains one of the first names in Emery’s teamsheet. He has already put in a few influential performances for them this season and seems to be growing in confidence.
At 30, Martinez has still got plenty of football left in him to play at his best. Hence, the Villans might be enticed to cash in on him if they receive a big offer for the player at the end of this season.
