In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, transfer insider Dean Jones urged Newcastle United to land Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount. Jones said,
“At the moment, I’m told it’s really just a watching brief because they’re not genuinely expecting Mason Mount to become available on the market.
“I think it would be a big surprise if he genuinely was for sale. But if he is, then Newcastle absolutely want to be in that conversation.”
Mount’s Campaign Of Mixed Emotions In English Football
Mount is having a tough campaign at Stamford Bridge as he has struggled to find consistency with his contributions for the West London club in the final third. The English sensation has participated in 31 matches for Chelsea this season, netting three goals and picking up six assists in the process across multiple competitions.
Still, the 24-year-old deserves a pat on the back for averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.5 shots, 1.4 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball on the attacking end of the field based on his pass success rate of 80% in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
Mount is under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2024. Thus, Newcastle could potentially sign him for a cut-price fee at the end of this season.
Is Mason Mount A Dream Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Mount loves a tackle and usually works his socks off at both ends of the field. He can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from long range and has got the vision to engineer a few clear-cut chances for his teammates up top when he is playing with confidence on the pitch.
The English talent can make a few energetic runs with the ball toward the opponent’s penalty box but needs to be more clinical in front of goal. He mainly operates in the number ten position but can also play as a box-to-box midfielder or as a left-sided winger if told to do so.
We can expect Mount to inject more quality into Eddie Howe‘s first XI and help the Magpies challenge for some major trophies in the coming seasons. At 24, the English playmaker will only get better in the coming seasons and has what it takes to be a fan-favorite at St. James’ Park. Therefore, Mount will be a dream choice for the Tyneside giants to consider when the transfer window reopens later his year.
