In a recent report, The Athletic claimed that Aston Villa are still showing interest in Olympique Marseille ace Matteo Guendouzi. It has been mentioned that the Villans are eyeing a move to land the French midfielder next summer.
Guendouzi’s Impressive Run Of Form In French Football This Season
Guendouzi is having a decent campaign at Marseille as he has put in a handful of impressive displays at the heart of their midfield. The former Arsenal talent has banged in four goals and grabbed four assists in 27 appearances for his current club this season on all fronts.
The French talent has caught the eye at times by averaging 1.2 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.9 shots and 0.7 key passes per game in Ligue 1. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from midfield, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 88.2% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Guendouzi is under contract at the French club until the summer of 2025. Thus, the Villans will have to make a big offer if they are serious about recruiting the French talent at the end of this campaign.
What Will Guendouzi Bring To Aston Villa?
Guendouzi is a tough-tackling midfielder who can sense the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed and can strike the ball well from long range. Guendouzi is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also play as an attacking midfielder or as a defensive midfielder if his manager asks him to do so.
The French midfield ace can engineer some decent plays for others around him when he is playing well on the field. He has contributed by scoring and creating his fair share of goals in Ligue 1 this season.
We can expect Guendouzi to bring a lot of energy and dynamism to Unai Emery’s midfield at Aston Villa. He is good enough to earn a regular starting spot at Villa Park and could help the West Midlands club push for European football in the coming seasons.
At 23, Guendouzi will only get better over the next few years which makes him a worthy target for the Villans to pursue at the end of this season. He could even offer some serious competition for Douglas Luiz, Boubacar Kamara and John McGinn at the Midlands club in the future. Thus, Emery should focus on going all out to bring him on board next summer.
