The La Liga title race is currently heating up with Barcelona enjoying a healthy eight-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of the league standings.
With more than a quarter of a season still left to be played, let’s take a look at the five teams with the most La Liga titles to their name.
Real Madrid (35 Titles)
Real Madrid have won the La Liga title 35 times in their history. Their most recent success came last season when they managed to win the league.
As mentioned earlier, Los Blancos are trailing Barcelona by eight points, so they have a lot of ground to catch up if they want to taste success in La Liga again.
Barcelona (26 Titles)
Barcelona have lifted the league title 26 times so far. The Catalan club won their last title back in the 2018-19 season.
However, Xavi’s men are currently in pole position to win the league for the 27th time in their history if they can hold off Real Madrid’s challenge in the final quarter of this campaign.
Atletico Madrid (11 Titles)
Atletico Madrid have been champions of Spain 11 times in their history. The Madrid outfit won their last league title in the 2020-21 season under the expert stewardship of Diego Simeone.
Athletic Club Bilbao (8 Titles)
Athletic Bilbao have managed to secure the Spanish top-flight title eight times thus far. Their last triumph came in the 1983-84 campaign, so it has been a long wait for the Bilbao supporters which Ernesto Valverde will be looking to rectify in the coming seasons.
Valencia (6 Titles)
Valencia have won the Spanish first division six times in their history. The Spanish side won their last league title in the 2003-04 campaign.
Real Sociedad (two-time La Liga winners), Deportivo La Coruna, Sevilla and Real Betis have all been champions of Spain before.
