In a recent report, Calciomercato revealed that Liverpool are in pole position to land Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat. It has been claimed that the Reds have set their sights on the Morocco international as they look to strengthen their midfield this year.
Amrabat’s Solid Season In Both Club And International Football
Amrabat has enjoyed a solid campaign at the Florence-based club as he has managed to put in a series of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The 26-year-old has featured in 24 matches for the Italian club this season but is yet to find the back of the net or even assist a goal for them across all fronts.
The Huizen-born talent caught the eye with his performances for his nation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup recently and did well to average 2.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per 90 minutes in the competition. He was even tidy when distributing possession from midfield after making 90.3% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Fiorentina is set to expire in the summer of 2024. Thus, the Reds could potentially land him on the cheap if they are serious about bringing him to Anfield at the end of this campaign.
Is Amrabat A Good Option For Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp?
Amrabat is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team in the middle of the park. He doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when needed and is a decent passer of the ball as well. Amrabat is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a central defender if his manager asks him to do so.
However, the Morocco international lacks quality in the final third which could see him struggle at a top club like Liverpool.
Still, there is no denying that Amrabat has what it takes to add more bite and steel to Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield department and increase competition for places within his match-day squad.
At 26, Amrabat is about to enter his prime which makes him a decent option for the Reds to consider this January or at the end of this season. However, Klopp would be better off focussing on recruiting a two-way midfielder before the end of this month if he wants his side to get back to challenging for a top-four place in the Premier League this season.
