In a recent print edition, Record stated that Chelsea are set to launch another move for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez. It has been claimed that the Blues want to make another offer for the Argentina international who is not planning to force his way out of the Portuguese club this month.
Fernandez’s Impressive Run Of Form In Portuguese Football This Season
Fernandez has enjoyed a fine campaign at Benfica as he has been responsible for producing several influential displays at the centre of their midfield. The 22-year-old has participated in 28 matches for the Portuguese outfit this season, netting four goals and grabbing seven assists in multiple competitions.
The Argentine midfield ace has given a good account of himself by averaging 2.4 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 1.8 shots, 1.8 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in Liga Portugal. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from midfield after completing 88.2% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Portuguese football (stats via whoscored).
Fernandez is under contract at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica until the summer of 2027. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Blues to land him before the end of this January transfer window.
Should Chelsea Boss Graham Potter Snap Fernandez Up?
Fernandez loves a tackle and can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his team in the middle of the park. He can strike the ball with venom and accuracy from long range and has got the vision to create some decent plays for others around him. Fernandez is a box-to-box midfielder but can also fill in as a defensive midfielder or function in the number ten position if his manager tells him to do so.
The Argentine playmaker can also make a few clever runs with the ball from midfield. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in English football.
At the moment, Fernandez is playing at a high level and would be an excellent signing for the Blues to pull off this month. However, Chelsea boss Graham Potter could struggle to convince Benfica to arrange a transfer for one of their best players during this winter transfer period.
At 22, Fernandez will only get better in the coming seasons and is well-equipped to make an instant impact at Stamford Bridge. Thus, the West London giants would be wise to snap Potter up this January or at the end of this season.
