In a recent report, La Gazzetta Express revealed that West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna is gathering interest from France with Olympique Marseille hoping to land him next year. It has been mentioned that Marseille are eyeing a January move to secure the services of the Italian centre-back whose contract with the Hammers is set to run out next summer.
Ogbonna’s Unimpressive Season At East London
The 34-year-old has featured in ten matches for the Hammers this season after failing to make himself a regular starter in David Moyes’ first XI. Ogbonna has done well to fill in as a sporadic presence in West Ham’s squad but needs to opt for a change of scenery if he wants to make the most out of the remainder of his playing career.
Ogbonna has endured his fair share of injury concerns during his time at the London Stadium. The Italian talent has made 212 appearances for West Ham thus far, scoring 13 goals and securing one assist on all fronts.
However, Ogbonna has got just over six months remaining in his current contract with the Hammers which could open the door for Marseille to seal a move for him this winter.
Should West Ham United Boss David Moyes Cut Ogbonna Loose?
Ogbonna can be a rock at the back when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the field. He is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his team on the defensive end of the pitch. Standing at 1.91m, the Italian is a strong presence in the air and doesn’t mind clearing his lines when the opposition are on the offensive.
At the moment, Ogbonna is facing an uncertain future at the London Stadium as he has struggled to play a prominent role for David Moyes‘ side this season.
At 34, the Italian talent has only got a few years left in him to play at a high level. Thus, it makes sense for him to make a move away from West Ham this winter.
If the Hammers are not planning to use him often, they should consider cutting him loose for a cut-price fee this January rather than risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of this campaign. Moyes should focus on using the money generated from his potential sale to bring in a cheap replacement capable of challenging for a regular starting spot at the East London club.
