In a recent interview with Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur expert John Wenham offered an update on the future of Everton talent Anthony Gordon. Wenham said that the English talent is staying with the Toffees for now as he said,
“I suspect Gordon has realised the interest from Tottenham and Chelsea has gone away.
“Everton will have offered him a pay rise and in his position, he may as well take it. Of course, the club are now protected if a bid does come in.
“He hasn’t exactly set the world on fire this season and Everton are struggling again. So he may as well stay there for a bit longer and try to get back to the form that caught everyone’s attention.
“Maybe next summer or even the summer after he could be back getting interest for a £50million transfer but right now he’s not there.”
Gordon’s Lackluster Form In English Football
Gordon is having an inconsistent season at the Merseyside club as he has struggled to be prolific for them in front of the opposition goal. The 21-year-old has banged in three goals in 15 matches for Everton during this campaign on all fronts.
The Liverpool-born talent deserves some credit for averaging 1.6 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution after making 77.2% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Should Everton Boss Frank Lampard Do With Regards To Gordon?
Gordon is proficient at creating space for himself to get a few shots in at goal. The Liverpool-born sensation can create some decent plays for others around him when he is playing well on the field.
The gifted starlet is a hard-working wide player who can also play as an attacking midfielder if asked to do so. He is usually quite intelligent when making runs with the ball out on the flanks but needs to work on improving his productivity in the final third.
Gordon is still quite young and would need more time before he can establish himself as a world-class winger in English football. However, there is no denying that he has got a bright future ahead at Everton and could play a key role for Frank Lampard‘s side at Goodison Park over the next few years as the Toffees look to push for European football.
Hence, Everton should think about keeping hold of him for the long run as he has got the ceiling to become a huge success story for them in the future.
