In a recent report from Manchester Evening News, it was mentioned that Manchester United are most interested in signing Memphis Depay of Barcelona. The Netherlands forward has been performing exceptionally in the 2022 FIFA World Cup as he has helped his nation qualify for the quarter-finals. His contract with the Catalan club expires at the end of this season and the January transfer window would be the best option to sanction his exit if the Spanish giants wish to recoup what they’ve spent on him.
Depay’s Injury-Plagued Campaign At Barcelona
Depay has struggled to perform at the Nou Camp so far as he has remained sidelined for the majority of the games due to a thigh injury. The Dutch attacker has only managed to find the back of the net once with merely appearing for three matches across all fronts.
However, the 28-year-old has given a good account of himself during those appearances after averaging 3.0 shots, 1.5 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per game in La Liga. He was even accurate when distributing possession after completing 83.9% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Manchester United Boss Erik Ten Hag Launch A Move For Him This January?
Depay excels at creating a yard of space for himself in front of the goal as he remains crafty with the ball at his feet. The Dutchman is an accurate finisher of the ball when he’s isolated against the goalkeeper. He can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from a distance and remains an attacking threat in the final third.
The Nederlands international is primarily a centre-forward but can operate as a left-sided wide player when required, which makes him a decent fit for Erik Ten Hag as his versatility could benefit the attacking department. His first spell at Manchester United wasn’t a successful one as he struggled in the attacking third. However, he since developed into one of Europe’s leading forward. We can expect him to inject more quality and depth into United’s frontline.
Depay could prove his worth with a return to the Premier League once again after a disappointing season with the Red Devils back in 2017. A move to Old Trafford could be helpful in rejuvenating his career as he had produced a few influential displays for Netherlands in the World Cup.
