In a recent report, O Jogo mentioned that Liverpool are set to rival Manchester United for Benfica ace Enzo Fernandez. It has been mentioned that the Reds are intensifying their pursuit to land the Argentine sensation next year.
Fernandez’s Decent Numbers In Portuguese Football
Fernandez is having a decent campaign at Benfica as he has managed to perform at a high level for them at the centre of the park. The Argentine midfield ace has found the back of the net three times and grabbed five assists in 24 appearances for the Portuguese outfit this season on all fronts.
The 21-year-old has been a reliable performer at the heart of Benfica’s midfield based on his average of 2.0 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 2.0 shots and 1.9 key passes per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution after making 89.9% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Portuguese club is set to expire in the summer of 2027. Hence, Liverpool will have to make a sizable offer if they are serious about recruiting him this January or next summer.
Is Fernandez A Good Choice For Liverpool?
Fernandez is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to earn the ball back for his team in the middle of the park. He can shoot the ball with power and precision from long range and can create some inviting chances for his teammates on the attacking end of the field. At the moment, the Argentina talent is playing some of his best football after helping his nation win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar recently. However, it remains to be seen whether he can cope with the physical nature and high intensity of regular Premier League football.
We can expect Fernandez to add more quality to Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield department at the Merseyside club. He could even help the Reds challenge for some top honours in the coming seasons. Klopp would be the perfect man to oversee his development and get the best out of him in England.
At 21, Fernandez has got a very bright future ahead of him and would be a great, long-term choice for Liverpool to consider during the January transfer window or at the end of this campaign. He could even go on to form a dominant midfield partnership with Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara at Anfield in the coming seasons.
