In a recent report from Liverpool Echo, it was stated that Liverpool are one of the several clubs that have joined the race for Antonio Silva of Benfica. It is understood that Tottenham Hotspur, Napoli and Juventus are monitoring the highly-rated defender, so there would be heavy competition in the transfer market for acquiring his services in the upcoming transfer windows.
Silva’s Impressive Campaign At Benfica So Far
Silva has only broken into the first-team picture this season but is already considered a future prospect and a regular at the squad following a series of solid displays at the backline. He has managed to find the back of the net on three occasions for the Portuguese outfit over sixteen appearances across all fronts.
The Portugal international has performed exceptionally in the defensive half after averaging 2.0 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 3.0 clearances per game in Liga Portugal. He has also been exceptional while distributing the ball from the back after making 92.2% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Portuguese football (stats via whoscored).
Should Klopp Bring Him To Liverpool?
Silva is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his side in the defensive third of the pitch. He doesn’t take too many risks when clearing his lines from danger. Standing tall at 1.87 meters, he can easily dominate his opponents in the air which helps him find the back of the net on a few occasions during the set pieces.
The 19-year-old fits the bill of a modern ball-playing defender as he remains proficient in playing his way out from the back. He can certainly bring more competition into Jurgen Klopp‘s defensive department being an understudy to Virgil Van Dijk and growing into one of the best defenders in Europe.
The Reds‘ transfer policies have always encouraged a move for players who could increase their value in the foreseeable future and Klopp has done well to identify him as a potential target. They should definitely bring him to Anfield in the January transfer window as he would be a brilliant addition to the squad.
