Recent reports from The Mirror state that Liverpool are keen on signing Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez in the summer transfer window as Jurgen Klopp looks set to add to his options in midfield.
‘Fernandez’s stock has firmly risen as a result [of the World Cup win] and Benfica are set to be inundated with offers, albeit they are under no pressure to sell according to reports. The 21-year-old only moved to Lisbon in the summer from River Plate, but would prefer a move to Liverpool if he did leave the Estadio da Luz.’ – the report read.
Argentine publication Diario La Capital claimed last week that the Argentine playmaker has already reached an agreement with Liverpool regarding a transfer next summer.
‘The English club already has an agreement in principle with the Portuguese club to incorporate the young Argentina midfielder from June 2023.’ – it stated.
How Does He Fit Into Klopp’s Plans?
Having come through the ranks at River Plate, Enzo Fernandez signed for Portuguese side Benfica in the summer of 2022 for a fee in the region of €12 million. He has made twenty-four appearances for the Eagles so far, scoring three goals and assisting five more across all competitions.
Besides, he has managed to put up some impressive numbers on the board this season – averaging two tackles, one interception, two shots, 1.9 key passes, and 9.8 long balls per ninety minutes in the Portuguese top-flight. Furthermore, the 21-year-old played a crucial role in Lionel Scaloni’s setup as he helped his nation claim World Cup glory.
While he is primarily a central midfielder, his versatility allows him to slot in as an attacking midfielder in the hour of need.
The Reds have been severely affected this season due to the absence of some regular midfielders, hence, Jurgen Klopp’s topmost priority should be to strengthen the department – and Enzo Fernandez fits the bill perfectly. Aged 21, he has plenty of experience under his belt, so the board should try its level best to bring him to Anfield next summer.
