In a recent report, Tuttomercato stated that Chelsea are working on extending Jorginho’s contract. It is understood that the Blues are hoping to tie the Italy international down to a new deal.
Jorginho’s Difficult Campaign At West London
The Brazil-born talent is having a tough season at Stamford Bridge as he has struggled to be consistent at times for the Blues at the centre of the park. He has failed to help Chelsea pick up a favourable run of results in the Premier League. Jorginho has registered three goals in 19 matches for the West London outfit during this campaign across multiple competitions.
The veteran talent has anchored the midfield with conviction by averaging 2.2 tackles and 1.0 interceptions per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution after making 84.6% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Jorginho is under contract at Chelsea until the end of this campaign. Hence, the Blues would be wise to tie him down to a new contract if they do not want to lose him for free next year.
Chelsea Working On Extending Jorginho’s Contract: Good Move For Both Parties?
Jorginho can get stuck in with some solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition in the middle of the park. He can scan the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his side and is a good passer of the ball as well. Jorginho is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder if needed.
The Italian midfield ace has a knack for scoring a few important goals for his team. However, he has sometimes struggled to influence the game in the final third for Chelsea this season.
At 30, Jorginho might still have a few good years left in him to play at his best. Hence, it makes a lot of sense for the Blues to offer him a new, short-term contract. The Italian talent has shown in the past that he can play a key role for Chelsea across all competitions. Thus, it is only fair to the player if Graham Potter offers him a chance to extend his time with the West London outfit.
Jorginho’s contract extension would be a good move for both the London club and the player as they look to bring even more success back to Stamford Bridge in the coming seasons.
