In a recent report, Record stated that Tottenham Hotspur are showing interest in Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards. It has been mentioned that Spurs want to secure the services of the English attacker as they are eyeing him as an understudy to Dejan Kulusevski.
Edwards’ Good Form In Portuguese Football This Season
Edwards is having a productive campaign at the Estádio José Alvalade after he put in a series of eye-catching displays on the right side of Sporting’s attack. The 23-year-old has participated in 19 matches for the Portuguese outfit this season, finding the back of the net on seven occasions and picking up six assists in the process across various competitions.
The England Under-20 international has been a consistent performer for Sporting in the final third as he is averaging 1.5 shots, 1.8 key passes and 2.0 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Liga Portugal. He has even been excellent when interchanging possession in the opposition half based on his pass completion rate of 80.6% in the top tier of Portuguese football (stats via whoscored).
The English talent is under contract at Sporting until the summer of 2026. Thus, it would be difficult for Spurs to lure him away to North London next year.
Is Edwards The Right Fit For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte?
Edwards can make space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target. He is a decent striker of the ball and can also engineer a few clear-cut chances for others around him on the attacking end of the field. Edwards is primarily a right-sided wide player but can also operate as a centre-forward or play in the number ten position if needed.
The English sensation can also make some clever runs with the ball in and around the opponent’s penalty box. Therefore, he will be an excellent backup to Kulusevski if Spurs can devise a way to bring him on board this January or at the end of this campaign.
At 23, Edwards has got a very promising future ahead of him and will only get better with each season. Thus, it makes sense for Tottenham boss Antonio Conte to move in for him next summer.
We can expect Edwards to add more goals and creativity to the North London club‘s attack and increase competition for places within their match-day squad. With all things considered, the Sporting CP wing wizard will be a good fit for Tottenham as long as he can maintain his good form in English football.
