Recent reports from Spanish media outlet Fichajes claim that Manchester United are keen on signing Athletic Bilbao youngster Nico Williams in the summer transfer window as Erik ten Hag looks set to add to his options in attack.
‘Among all those teams that would soon be looking for the signing of Nico Williams would be some from the category of Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid, these being the first candidates to get the signing of Nico Williams in the summer of 2023.’ – the translated version of the report stated.
The Spaniard’s current contract at San Mames is set to expire in the summer of 2024.
A Good Choice?
Having come through the ranks at Athletic Bilbao itself, Nico Williams made his first team debut on 28 April 2021, coming on as a second-half substitute for Jon Morcillo in a 2–2 draw at home against Real Valladolid. Over the course of the past couple of years, the 20-year-old winger has made 57 appearances for The Lions, scoring seven goals and assisting five more across all competitions.
Even this season, he has managed to put up some impressive numbers on the board – averaging 0.9 tackles, 1.7 shots, 1.4 key passes, 1.4 dribbles, and 0.6 crosses per ninety minutes in the Spanish top-flight. Besides, his versatility allows him to fill in on the left flank in the hour of need.
Should Manchester United decide to go in for him, it would be a very surprising move. Ten Hag recently spent a lump sum amount of money in bringing Antony from Ajax, who plays in the exact same position as Neco. So Nico Williams will have to settle for a place on the bench, and given his starting status at Bilbao, he might not be too keen on that.
