In a recent report, Calciomercato stated that Chelsea are among clubs hoping to sign Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar on a free transfer next summer. It has been claimed that the Blues along with Paris Saint-Germain are preparing a big contract proposal for the Slovak centre-back for when his contract at San Siro runs out at the end of this campaign.
Skriniar’s Decent Form At San Siro This Season
Skriniar is having a solid campaign at Inter as he has managed to put in a series of dominant displays for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The 27-year-old has made 14 appearances for the Italian club this season across various competitions.
The Slovak sensation has been a rock at the back and deserves some credit for averaging 1.0 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He has even been excellent when distributing possession from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 92.5% in the Italian top-flight (stats via whoscored).
The 27-year-old is on an expiring contract at the Milan outfit. Hence, he will be a good, cost-effective option for Chelsea to consider at the end of this campaign.
Should Chelsea Head Coach Graham Potter Snap Skriniar Up Next Year?
Skriniar is an experienced defender who usually remains calm under pressure and can make a few timely interceptions for his team inside his half. He is often quick to spot the danger and get stuck in with some solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition. The Slovak international doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and is also proficient at playing his way out from the back. Standing at 1.88m, Skriniar has got the strength to dominate the opposition in the air and can even chip in by scoring the odd goal from time to time.
Thus, Skriniar will be a good fit for Chelsea boss Graham Potter‘s style of play at Stamford Bridge. We can expect the Inter Milan star to bring more bite and steel to Chelsea’s midfield and help the Blues remain competitive in both domestic and European football.
However, it remains to be seen whether Skriniar can maintain his good form in the Premier League if the West London club can find a way to convince him next summer. All in all, Potter should try everything in his power to snap the Inter defensive ace up next year.
