In a recent report, Fichajes mentioned that Newcastle United are among several clubs hoping to sign Real Madrid outcast Marco Asensio this summer. It has been claimed that the Magpies could face competition in the form of AC Milan and Liverpool in the race to secure the services of the Spain international next year.
Asensio’s Decent Form In Spain Last Season
The Spanish sensation had a good season at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium recently as he managed to help Real Madrid do the La Liga and the UEFA Champions League double. Asensio has found the back of the net on 12 occasions and earned two assists in 42 matches for Carlo Ancelotti’s team in the previous campaign across all competitions.
Asensio was a reliable performer in the opponent’s half after he averaged 2.1 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in 2021-22 La Liga season. He was even accurate when distributing possession from the right flank as he made 87.7% of his attempted passes in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
The Spanish talent is on an expiring contract at the Bernabeu. Hence, Newcastle has got a good chance of landing him on a free transfer when his current deal with the Madrid giants expires next summer.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Go For Asensio?
Asensio remains an excellent playmaker in the final third as he got the vision to cut open the opposition backline with a few decisive passes in and around the opponent’s penalty box. The Spaniard can chip in by scoring a handful of important goals from the right flank. Asensio mainly operates on the right wing but can also function as an attacking midfielder or as a left-winger if needed.
Someone of Asensio’s quality and potential would be a massive coup for Newcastle United if Eddie Howe can find a way to lure him to St. James’ Park at the end of this season.
We can expect Asensio to inject more quality into Howe’s defence. Furthermore, he could even help the Magpies challenge for a major trophy or two in the coming seasons.
Thus, Howe should focus on going for Asensio next summer as he will be a decent option for them in the short term. However, there are some question marks over the Spanish sensation’s injury record which makes him a risky signing for the Magpies to pursue in 2023. Still, the pros outweigh the cons of singing Asensio as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in England.
