In a recent column with Caughtoffside, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Liverpool are keeping tabs on Flamengo youngster Joao Gomes. It is understood that the Reds are monitoring the development of the Brazilian starlet ahead of a potential move in the future.
Gomes’ Impressive Form In Brazilian Football
Gomes has already made 40 senior appearances for his current employers in the Brazilian Serie A, picking up two assists in the process across all fronts. He has caught the eye for his solid performances for Flamengo at the centre of the park.
The 21-year-old has been a reliable performer at the Brazilian club as he is averaging 3.2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 0.6 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in the Brazilian Serie A. He has even been accurate when interchanging possession with his teammates from midfield, based on his pass success rate of 87.3% in the top tier of Brazilian football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract with Flamengo is set to run out in the summer of 2025. Hence, the Reds would have to make a sizable offer if they want to secure his services next year.
Liverpool Keeping Tabs On Gomes: Is He A Prospect For The Future?
Gomes is a good tackler of the ball and can sense the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his side at the centre of the park. He doesn’t take too many risks when clearing the danger inside his half and can be a lively presence in the opponent’s half. Gomes usually plays as a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder if required.
The Brazilian prospect has got the vision to cut open the opposition defence with a decisive pass on the attacking end of the field. Thus, he would be a good fit for Jurgen Klopp‘s style of play at Anfield.
We can expect Gomes to add more bite and steel to Liverpool‘s midfield and increase competition for places within their squad. At 21, he is already good enough to make an immediate impact at Anfield if the Reds can devise a way to bring him on board this January or at the end of this season.
There is no doubt that Gomes is a prospect to watch out for in the coming years. Furthermore, Klopp would be the perfect man to oversee his development and unlock the best out of him at the Merseyside club over the next decade.
