In a recent report, Liverpool Echo has stated that Liverpool are once again being linked to Enzo Fernandez of SL Benfica. It is understood that the Reds are looking to strengthen their midfield department after an injury crisis cost them several points in the Premier League table. The Merseyside club sit at the eighth position having acquired just nine points from six league fixtures so far.
Fernandez’s Run Of Form This Season
Fernandez is off to a decent start with Benfica as he has put in a series of impressive performances in the central areas of the field. He has found the back of the net on one occasion so far this season, across all fronts.
The Argentine midfielder has given a good account of himself performing consistently in the centre of the park as he averaged 2.4 shots, 1.3 key passes, 2.1 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game in the Liga Portugal. He has even been accurate with his ball distribution as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 89.9% in the Portuguese top-flight (stats via whoscored).
What Will He Bring To Liverpool?
Fernandez can get stuck in with some solid tackles to make life tough for the opposition at the centre of the park. He has got the vision to play a few decisive passes in the final third and can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from long range. Furthermore, Fernandez is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also act as a defensive midfielder if required.
The 21-year-old has shown what he is capable of on numerous occasions but life in English football is tough and adapting to the Premier League could be difficult. He has got the potential to become one of the best in Europe and could grow immensely under Jurgen Klopp.
If the Reds manage to acquire him in the next transfer window he could certainly add more depth and creativity to the midfield. However, earning a regular spot might be difficult given the heavy competition in the first team. Klopp could use him in rotation alongside Harvey Elliot but he would have to perform consistently to climb up the pecking order.
