In a recent report, Sport mentioned that Liverpool are among clubs hoping to land Real Madrid playmaker Marco Asensio this January. It is believed that the Reds could face competition in the form of AC Milan and Arsenal in pursuit of the Spanish winger this winter.
Asensio’s Impressive Numbers At Real Madrid Last Season
Asensio had a decent campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium recently as he helped Los Blancos do the La Liga and the UEFA Champions League double. The 26-year-old found the back of the net on 12 occasions and grabbed two assists in 42 matches for Real Madrid last season across all competitions.
The Palma de Mallorca-born sensation performed well to average 2.1 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in La Liga. He even took care of the ball well when distributing possession in the opponent’s half after he made 87.7% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spain (stats via whoscored).
Asensio’s current contract at the Bernabeu is set to expire at the end of this campaign. Hence, Liverpool should have a good shot at signing him on the cheap during the January transfer window.
Is Asensio A Good Option For Liverpool?
Asensio can create some inviting chances for others around him as he has got the vision to unlock the opponent’s defence with a killer pass up top which is something that Liverpool can definitely use at the moment. He is primarily a right-sided winger but can also play on the left flank or as an attacking midfielder down the middle if required.
The Spaniard can even score a handful of important goals for his team and is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet. However, there are some question marks over whether he is good enough to cope with the physical nature and high intensity of Premier League football.
At 26, the Spaniard is entering his prime, so this winter would be an ideal time for him to opt for a change of scenery in search of more playing opportunities in the coming seasons.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be the perfect man to unlock the best out of Asensio. Hence, he would be a decent option for the Reds to pursue in this off-season as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in England. We can expect the Real Madrid playmaker to add more goals and creativity to Klopp’s frontline at Anfield and could help the Merseyside club challenge for some major trophies in the coming seasons.
