Gavi’s Impressive Rise At Barcelona
Gavi has enjoyed a meteoric rise at the Nou Camp as he has put in a series of impressive displays for Barcelona last season after breaking into Xavi’s first team. The 18-year-old has already made 51 senior appearances for Barca so far, finding the back of the net twice and earning six assists across all fronts.
The Spain international performed well to average 1.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.9 shots and 1.6 dribbles per game in La Liga last season. He was even excellent when distributing possession from midfield based on his pass success rate of 89.3% in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract with the Catalan club is set to run out in the summer of 2023. Hence, Barca are in danger of losing him as a free agent when his deal expires at the end of this campaign.
Can Barcelona Head Coach Xavi Afford To Lose Gavi?
Gavi is a good tackler of the ball and can make some timely interceptions for his team. He can strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range and has got the eye to play a decisive pass on the attacking end of the field. The Spanish whizkid can even make a few clever runs with the ball towards the opposition penalty area.
At the moment, Gavi is playing some of the best football of his young career. Hence, it is no surprise that he has caught the eyes of a top club like Bayern Munich.
Right now, Xavi should focus on keeping the young talent happy and try to convince him to pen a new contract. The fact that Barca could potentially lose him on a free transfer makes it necessary for them to tie him down to a fresh deal.
Barcelona have enough strength in depth in their squad to cope with Gavi’s exit. However, it won’t make any sense for them financially to let the young midfield ace run down his contract. At 18, Gavi has the potential to become a future superstar at the Nou Camp. Therefore, Barca should look to keep hold of him for as long as they can.
