In a recent report, The Mirror mentioned that Barcelona are eyeing a move for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho. It is believed that the Catalan giants have identified the Italy international as a replacement for Sergio Busquets at the Nou Camp.
Jorginho’s Up And Down Season At Stamford Bridge So Far
Jorginho has made a mixed start to this campaign as he has struggled to help Chelsea be consistent in terms of results in the Premier League. The 30-year-old has scored one goal in eight appearances for the Blues across all fronts.
The Brazil-born talent deserves some credit for averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 0.5 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even distributed the ball well from midfield after making 85.1% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Jorginho’s current contract at Stamford Bridge is set to run out at the end of this season. Hence, Barca would have a good chance of landing him on the cheap this January or on a free transfer next summer.
Is Jorginho A Good Option For Barcelona Head Coach Xavi?
Jorginho is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his team at the centre of the park. He can even orchestrate some meaningful chances for his teammates on the attacking end of the field.
Jorginho is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder if needed. Furthermore, the Italian sensation is an expert penalty taker and has scored most of his Chelsea goals from the spot. However, he can sometimes be a bit slow to react to the danger which can make him a liability when the opposition are launching a counter.
Barcelona can definitely use someone of Jorginho’s skillset as he will add more quality to Xavi‘s midfield department. At 30, he has still got a lot of football left in him to play at a high level. Thus, Jorginho could prove to be a decent option for the Catalan giants to consider this winter or at the end of this campaign as he has what it takes to help them compete for some major trophies over the next few years.
We can expect the Italian talent to serve as a good replacement for Sergio Busquets who has struggled to impress with his performances at the Nou Camp this season. Hence, Xavi should think about trying everything in his power to lure Jorginho to Spain next year.
