Aston Villa welcomed Manchester City at Villa Park earlier this evening as they looked to secure a good result in front of their home fans. The Villans made a good start to the game and managed to get into the half-time break with a goalless scoreline.
Steven Gerrard’s men made a sloppy start to the second half as they conceded the opening goal in the 50th minute when Erling Haaland scored from close range. However, Leon Bailey equalised for the Villans in the 74th minute when he found the back of the net with a composed finish. The contest ended honours even with Aston Villa earning an impressive 1-1 draw versus the reigning Premier League champions.
Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player fared during the match against Man City.
GK: Emiliano Martinez – 7/10
The Argentine keeper made a few decent saves at the back but should have done better to read De Bruyne’s cross in the lead-up to Haaland’s goal.
RB: Matty Cash – 6/10
He hardly got into the flow of the game and had to be replaced in the 26th minute.
CB: Ezri Konsa – 6/10
Konsa made two important defensive contributions and did enough to restrict Man City to just one goal.
CB: Tyrone Mings – 6.5/10
He made a lot of crucial clearances inside his half and was strong in the air as well.
LB: Lucas Digne – 6.5/10
The French talent won his fair share of aerial duels and gave a good account of himself on the defensive end of the field. However, he offered very little going forward.
CM: Douglas Luiz – 6.5/10
He anchored the midfield well and made one good chance in the final third.
CM: Boubacar Kamara – 6/10
Kamara was always willing to make a tackle at the centre of the park but failed to get going in the opponent’s half.
CM: John McGinn – 6/10
The Scottish sensation didn’t get a foothold in the game and got substituted in the 64th minute.
RAM: Leon Bailey – 7/10
Bailey was quiet for most of the game but kept his composure to score the all-important equaliser for the Villans in the 74th minute.
LAM: Jacob Ramsey – 7/10
He kept fighting despite struggling to cause the opposition defenders any real problems. Ramsey deserves credit for setting up Bailey’s equalsier.
ST: Ollie Watkins – 6/10
Watkins worked hard off the ball but didn’t get a sniff at goal.
Substitutes:
RB: Ashley Young – 6.5/10
He did well to fill in at right-back for most of the game after coming on in the first half.
CAM: Philippe Coutinho – 6/10
Coutinho failed to get into the rhythm of the game.
RAM: Emiliano Buendia – N/A
He didn’t get enough time to make an impact.
