In a recent report, Calciomercato claimed that Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is gathering interest from Italy with both Juventus and Roma eyeing a move to sign him next year. It has been mentioned that the Villans’ midfield ace is on the radar of Juventus and Roma with his current contract at Villa Park set to run out at the end of this campaign.
Luiz’s Up And Down Season At Villa Park This Season
The Brazilian midfield ace has experienced a tough campaign at the West Midlands club but is facing an uncertain future as his current contract with the Villans will run out next summer. Luiz has found the back of the net on two occasions and secured two yellow cards in seven matches for Aston Villa this season across various competitions.
However, the 24-year-old has seen a lot of his playing chances come off the bench which could be why he is only averaging 0.7 tackles and 0.7 key passes per game in Premier League football. He has distributed the ball relatively well after making 86.7% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
The Rio de Janeiro-born sensation will now have a good chance to show what he is capable of in the Premier League as Boubacar Kamara is currently sidelined with a serious injury. However, he is on an expiring contract, so it will be really difficult for Steven Gerrard to keep hold of him beyond next summer.
Is Luiz’s Time At Aston Villa Coming To An End?
Luiz is a solid tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his team at the centre of the park when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. He can even orchestrate some inviting chances for his teammates in the opponent’s half.
However, the Brazilian talent has sometimes struggled to be consistent which has seen him serve as a rotational piece in Steven Gerrard’s squad recently.
All signs point toward Luiz’s time with the Villans coming to an end. Unless the player has a change of heart and decides to pen a new deal at Villa Park, it is difficult to see how Aston Villa can keep hold of him beyond this season.
At 24, Luiz will only get better in the future, so it is no surprise that top clubs like Juventus and Roma are hoping to acquire his services next year.
