Liverpool have had a dismal start to their 2022-23 campaign as they’ve only acquired nine points from six matches. The Merseyside club sits at seventh place in the Premier League table following poor performances against Fulham, Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Everton. They’ve been held to a draw in three of these games and lost to a substandard Red Devils side at Old Trafford. A 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth made little to no difference as they were utterly dominated by Napoli in the UEFA Champions League group stages.
Growing Concerns For Liverpool
It’s not just the results that seem alarming for Jurgen Klopp but many players are struggling to find their form and play to their standards. Mohamed Salah has struggled to find the back of the net following Sadio Mane’s exit while Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold have not met the standards that they’ve set over the years. Both of them are arguably the best in the world in their positions but they seem laboured and demotivated having barely made an effort to stop the opposition in their tracks. Darwin Nunez, their latest star signing, received a three-match ban when they needed his services the most, which was careless of the Uruguayan striker.
Multiple players have been seriously out of form amidst the club’s injury crisis at the beginning of this campaign. However, as one could solely make an excuse of the injury situation it would certainly not do any justice as they had the summer transfer window to assess their options and add to their squad to counter such scenarios.
Should Klopp Bring In Necessary Reinforcements?
The Reds need to reinvent before they drop out of the title race as Manchester City and Arsenal have pulled through with amazing performances from the squad early on this season. Jurgen Klopp has made poor judgements by not bringing forth better performers and allowing underperformers to keep their place in the match-day squad.
The side is known for its relentless high pressing football which demands a lot of physicality from the players putting their bodies through a lot of stress. Rotation is key to providing regular starters with their well-deserved rest, given the intensive pieces of training that they go through. But the club needs to add reinforcements to their defence and the midfield areas which could bring more quality to the bench. Heavy competition within the club could also motivate players to perform better in their respective positions and that could serve as a solution to their decline in form.
Injuries are a part of the game and that certainly deals a huge blow to the squad, but having quality replacements or substitutes could tackle the crisis in the treatment room. The club has gone through such a crisis in the 2020-21 campaign and Klopp did well to fix the situation at that moment. The German tactician has the confidence of his fans that he could very well recover from this but needs to act quickly and make an immediate impact after the international break.
