In a recent tweet, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano offered an update on the future of Barcelona forward Memphis Depay. It has been mentioned that the Catalan giants are working on releasing the Dutch attacker as a free agent this month.

Depay’s Impressive Form At Barcelona Last Season
Depay had a fruitful season at the Nou Camp recently as he managed to put in a handful of influential displays for Barca in the final third. The 28-year-old was involved in 37 matches for the Catalan club in the previous campaign, scoring 13 times and picking up two assists in all competitions.
The Dutch talent deserves some credit for averaging 2.2 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He even took care of the ball well when interchanging possession deep inside the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 82.1% in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
Barcelona Working On Releasing Depay As A Free Agent: Good Move For Both Parties?
Depay can create space for himself to get a few shots in on target and is a decent finisher in front of the opposition goal when he is playing at the top of his game.
The Dutch sensation has got the eye to play a killer pass in the final third and can also complete some encouraging dribbles in the opponent’s half. He is primarily a centre-forward but can even play as a wide player on either flank if his manager tells him to do so.
However, following the arrival of Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich earlier this summer, Barcelona can afford to let Depay leave so that they can get his name off their wage bill.
The Dutch talent is currently not guaranteed regular playing time at the Nou Camp, so he can benefit from parting ways with the Catalan club this summer. With all things considered, Barca‘s desire to let Depay leave as a free agent would be a good move for both the player and Xavi’s side before the end of this transfer window.
