In a recent report, Football.London has mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon has made his exit from North London as he signed a season-long loan deal with Stade Rennais. It is understood that Spurs have included the option for the French outfit to buy the defender for £16.7 million after his loan spell.
Rodon’s Little Participation At Tottenham Hotspur Until Now
Joe Rodon moved to Tottenham from Swansea City in 2020 after which he appeared in 12 matches and then was loaned back to his former club in the second half of the 2020-21 season. He only made three appearances for the Lilywhites last season, which makes it needless to say that he requires regular playtime this year with the 2022 World Cup on the horizon.
Missing out on the South Korea tour last month due to illness, he was offered a few minutes against the Rangers but he did not make the trip to Israel for the final match against Roma. Antonio Conte made it prevalent that he did not have plans for him in the next season, so a move away was the only viable option left for him.
Is It A Good Move From Conte?
Antonio Conte has done well to identify the players he won’t be utilising in his next campaign to offer them a chance to secure a loan move or permanently make an exit from North London to find regular playtime elsewhere. It is futile to have a squad filled with players who are deemed surplus to the club’s requirements, so it is better to offload them as it is also beneficial for their future.
Rodon is the sixth man to depart Tottenham following Cameron Carter-Vickers, Steven Bergwijn and Jack Clarke’s permanent exits, and Dane Scarlett and Troy Parrott’s loan moves. The Wales international has to stay fit and needs to be on the field to prepare himself for the winter World Cup at the end of this year and he will likely get that with the French outfit in Ligue 1.
The 24-year-old has got room to improve and get better, even though Rennais have the option to buy him after the completion of his loan spell. If he performs consistently, then that might catch the eye of Conte we could see him being called back to North London to provide cover in the defensive department. As for now, he will be enjoying regular football as he begins his campaign in France ahead of the commencement of Ligue 1.
