In a recent report from The Sun, it was mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic of Lazio. It is understood that Manchester United have been in pursuit of the midfield ace but Spurs have offered to pay an initial fee of £38 million and £13 million in add-ons which sums up to a £51 million transfer package, an offer that the Italian outfit would not be able to refuse.
Milinkovic-Savic’s Impressive Campaign For Lazio Last Season
The Serbian international has had a solid campaign with the Italian side as he put in some master class displays from the central areas of the field. He banged in eleven goals and produced twelve assists over 45 appearances last season across multiple competitions.
Milinkovic-Savic has performed consistently to establish himself as a key player for Lazio based on his averages of 1.8 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 2.0 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game in the Serie A. He has also been impressive with his ball distribution after completing 81.4% of his attempted passes in the Italian top flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Conte Bring Him To Tottenham Hotspur?
Milinkovic-Savic is a deep-lying midfielder as he plays in the holding positions and likes to distribute possession from the back. The Serbian ace has the vision to find his teammates who are on the front foot and can make accurate long passes to set them up with opportunities in front of the goal. He remains a solid tackler of the ball as he can time his tackles and also make some clever interceptions to win the ball back for his side.
Standing at 1.91 meters, his tall and strong frame helps him dominate his opponents in the air. He excels at getting out of tight situations and creating space for himself. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can operate as an attacking midfielder and also play as a left-sided wide player. Furthermore, he doesn’t mind taking a shot at the goal from a distance as he can shoot with power and accuracy.
A player of such calibre would demand regular play-time, so his arrival at North London would mean that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur would likely be competing for minutes with Milinkovic-Savic. Antonio Conte has done well to identify him and make a bid, and it is to be seen now if Lazio accept the offer from the Lilywhites before the transfer window comes to a close.
