In a recent report, The Mirror stated that Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio is gathering interest from the Premier League with Arsenal and Manchester United eyeing a move for him this month. It is understood that both English clubs are looking to sign the Spaniard from Los Blancos with his current contract at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium set to run out next summer.
Asensio’s Impressive Numbers In The Spanish Capital
Asensio had a decent campaign with the Madrid giants recently as he managed to produce a series of productive displays for them in the final third. The Spanish talent was involved in 42 matches for Los Blancos last season, registering 12 goals and two assists across all competitions.
The 26-year-old deserves a lot of credit for averaging 2.1 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in La Liga. He was even tidy with his ball distribution after making 87.7% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
Asensio is under contract at the Bernabeu until the end of this campaign, so it makes sense for Real Madrid to cash in on him this summer or else risk losing him as a free agent next year.
Should Real Madrid Boss Carlo Ancelotti Let Asensio Go This Summer?
Asensio is a good playmaker on the attacking end of the field and can make a few dangerous runs with the ball out on the flanks. He can even strike the ball with precision and venom from long range and doesn’t give away possession cheaply when retaining the ball in the opposition half. The Spaniard mainly operates as a right-sided wide player but can even play on the left flank or fill in as an attacking midfielder if required.
At the moment, Asensio has what it takes to still be an important member of Carlo Ancelotti‘s squad. However, he is not a guaranteed starter at the Bernabeu, so it is only logical for the player to opt for a change of scenery in search of more game time in the coming seasons.
At 26, Asensio’s peak years are ahead of him but if Ancelotti plans to use his sporadically, then it is only fair to the Spaniard if he is allowed to leave before the end of this summer transfer window.
Los Blancos can benefit from getting Asensio’s name off their wage bill which will free up space for new acquisitions in the future. With all things considered, the Madrid outfit should consider letting the Spanish wide player go this month.
