Newcastle United entertained Manchester City at St. James’ Park earlier this evening as they looked to grind out a positive result in front of their home fans. The Magpies made a poor start to the game as they conceded the opening goal in the fifth minute when Ilkay Gundogan scored for Man City. However, Miguel Almiron equalised for the home side in the 28th minute before Callum Wilson completed the turnaround with a tidy finish just 11 minutes later. Newcastle went into the half-time break 2-1 up on the scoreline.
Kieran Trippier scored a superb free-kick in the 54th minute to put his team 3-1 up on the day. However, Man City came roaring back through a goal each from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva respectively. The contest ended with Eddie Howe’s men fighting out an impressive 3-3 draw at home.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle United player performed during the match against Man City.
GK: Nick Pope – 8.5/10
The Magpies’ goalie made a lot of world-class saves at the back but still ended up conceding three goals during the game. He was arguably Newcastle’s man of the match.
RB: Kieran Trippier – 8/10
Trippier tried to keep things solid at the back and scored a great goal with a perfectly executed free-kick in the second half.
CB: Fabian Schar – 7/10
Schar did his best to stop Man City from wreaking havoc inside his penalty box. He made a lot of important interceptions and clearances on the defensive end of the field.
CB: Sven Botman – 6.5/10
He cleared his lines when required and engineered one key chance going forward.
LB: Dan Burn – 6.5/10
Burn worked his socks off defensively down the left flank but failed to make an impact in the Man City half.
CM: Joe Willock – 6.5/10
He did his best to shield his backline and made a couple of encouraging runs with the ball from midfield.
CM: Bruno Guimaraes – 6.5/10
Guimaraes anchored the midfield with conviction and orchestrated one good opportunity in the final third.
CM: Joelinton – 7/10
He chased the opposition down really well and managed to create two good chances in the opponent’s half.
RW: Miguel Almiron – 7/10
His pace caused a few problems for the Man City defenders. Almiron deserves credit for scoring the all-important equaliser in the first half.
ST: Callum Wilson – 7.5/10
The English striker ran the channels well and managed to get his name on the scoresheet with a good finish in the 39th minute.
LW: Allan Saint-Maximin – 8/10
Saint-Maximin completed a handful of dangerous dribbles in the final third and ended the match with two assists to his name.
Substitutes:
ST: Chris Wood – 6/10
He offered very little after coming off the bench.
CM: Sean Longstaff – 6/10
The English talent added some energy to Howe’s midfield.
CM: Jacob Murphy – N/A
He didn’t get enough time to make an impact.
CB: Emil Krafth – N/A
Krafth came on for the final moments of the game.
