In a recent report, The Telegraph mentioned that Manchester United are still showing interest in Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. It has been claimed that the Red Devils are eyeing a move for the Serbian midfield ace this month.
Milinkovic-Savic’s Decent Form At Lazio Last Season
Milinkovic-Savic managed to put in a run of dominant performances at the heart of Lazio’s midfield last season. He deserves credit for performing at a high level for the Italian club after he found the back of the net 11 times and earned 12 assists in 47 appearances for them on all fronts.
The Serbian talent was a consistent performer as he averaged 1.8 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 2.0 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game in Serie A football. He even took care of possession well at the centre of the park based on his pass completion rate of 81.4% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Milinkovic-Savic’s current contract with Lazio is set to run out in the summer of 2024. Without UEFA Champions League football, Man United could struggle to land him on the cheap during this summer transfer window.
Is Milinkovic-Savic The Right Choice For Manchester United Boss Erik Ten Hag?
Milinkovic-Savic loves a tackle and can time his challenges well to make a few important interceptions in midfield. The 27-year-old doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and can strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range. Milinkovic-Savic usually operates as a box-to-box midfielder but is versatile enough to play as a free-flowing attacking midfielder if needed.
The Serbian sensation has got the vision to cut open the opposition defence with a decisive pass on the attacking end of the field. Plus, he is a decent dribbler with the ball which makes him a good choice for Man United boss Erik ten Hag to pursue before the end of this transfer window.
At 27, Milinkovic-Savic is entering the peak stage of his playing career and has what it takes to help the Red Devils get back to challenging for a top-four spot in the Premier League.
The Lazio star could even serve as an upgrade over Fred, who has struggled to prove his worth at Old Trafford thus far. All in all, ten Hag would be wise to engineer a move to lure Milinkovic-Savic to the Theatre of Dreams this month as he would add more goals and creativity to his first XI.
