In a recent report from Manchester Evening News, it was mentioned that Manchester City are still pursuing Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes. It is understood that the Sky Blues are hoping to sign the Portuguese Wizard in an attempt to replace Bernardo Silva, should Barcelona lure him to Camp Nou.
Nunes’ Impressive Campaign With Sporting CP Last Season
Nunes showed some impressive displays in the centre of the park, having a solid campaign for the Portuguese outfit. He scored four goals and created five assists over 50 appearances for the Portuguese giants last season across all competitions.
The Portugal international proved to be a reliable performer after putting in consistent performances by averaging 1.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.6 shots, 0.7 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game in Liga Portugal. He was even tidy when distributing possession from the midfield after completing 85.8% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese top flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Guardiola Bring Him To Manchester City?
Nunes is a decent tackler of the ball, as he can time his tackles and also make some clever interceptions to win back possession. He can easily get out of tight situations having excellent ball control. Furthermore, he can find the back of the net on multiple occasions as he remains a decent finisher. The Portuguese midfielder can produce some great assists in the final third by setting up his teammates on the front foot.
The 23-year-old has a lot of room for improvement and could become even better over the coming seasons, so he should be a decent replacement for Bernardo Silva. He remains versatile to feature anywhere over the midfield and could also fill in as an advanced attacking midfielder who could go deep into the opposition to create more chances.
Pep Guardiola should do well to make a decent offer to the Portuguese giants if he wants to bring him over to the Etihad Stadium. The Sky Blues will require a replacement should Silva move away, and Nunes would be the perfect fit.
