In a recent report from Sky Sports, it was mentioned that Manchester City have successfully completed the signing of Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht. It is understood that the Sky Blues had agreed to sign the left-back last week, and the 21-year-old has now completed his medical, looking forward to making his debut in the coming days.
The Mancunian giants have paid a transfer fee of £11 million to acquire his services while the Spanish defender signed a four-year deal with the defending champions.
Gomez’s Impressive Campaign For Anderlecht Last Season
Gomez had a splendid season at Anderlecht as he put in some impressive displays on the left side of their backline. He scored seven goals and created fifteen assists over 49 appearances for the Belgian outfit in his previous campaign across all fronts.
The Badalona-born talent gave a good account of himself both in attack and defence after averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 0.9 clearances, 1.2 shots, 1.7 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the Jupiler Pro League. He was even tidy with his ball distribution after completing 83.2% of his attempted passes in the Belgian top-flight (stats via whoscored).
How Does He Fit Into Guardiola’s Manchester City?
Gomez is a solid tackler of the ball as he can time his tackles and make some crucial interceptions to win the ball back inside his own half. He remains quick on clearing his lines when the opposition is on the front foot and is even proficient in playing his way out from the back.
The Spanish starlet can create a few chances for his teammates in front of the goal and remains a decent finisher himself. He is primarily a left-back but is versatile enough to play as a left-sided wide player or at the right-back position if required.
At 21, the future seems bright for Gomez as long as he continues to improve his game over the coming seasons. It was thought that Gomez would be loaned out immediately after his arrival but Guardiola has confirmed that the full-back will be staying at the Etihad Stadium to compete in the left-back position. This could also see Joao Cancelo shift to his preferred position on the right flank, taking the burden off of Kyle Walker.
There is no denying that Gomez is a player to watch out for in the future; however, only time will tell if he can make a smooth transition to life in English football.
