In a recent report, TNT Sports claimed that Liverpool are eyeing a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfield ace Leandro Paredes. It is believed that the Reds are hoping to acquire the services of the Argentine talent this month.
Paredes’ Injury-Plagued Season At Parc Des Princes
Paredes had to endure an injury-plagued season at Paris recently but did well to put in a few eye-catching displays for PSG at the centre of the park. The 28-year-old found the back of the net once and picked up two assists in 22 matches for the French club in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The San Justo-born sensation could only manage to average 1.5 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.5 shots and 0.5 key passes per game in Ligue 1. However, he was excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 95.8% of his attempted passes in the top tier of French football (stats via whoscored).
Paredes’ current contract with the French giants is set to expire in the summer of 2024. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Reds to lure him to Anfield on the cheap this month.
Is Paredes A Good Choice For Liverpool?
Paredes is a solid tackler of the ball and can make some timely interceptions at the centre of the park. He can even create some decent plays for others around him and hardly gives away the ball cheaply in midfield. Paredes is primarily a defensive midfielder but can even fill in as a box-to-box midfielder if required.
However, there are some concerns over his long-term health as he has missed a lot of important games due to injuries over the past 12 months.
At 28, Paredes is currently playing at his prime and could strengthen Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield for a few years. He will no doubt increase competition for places within Liverpool‘s match-day squad if the Reds can devise a way to get him on board before the end of this summer transfer window.
We can expect Paredes to add more bite and steel to Klopp’s midfield as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in England. He could even help the Reds cope with injuries and fixture congestion better in the coming seasons. With all things considered, Paredes will be a decent choice for the Merseyside club as he could serve as an ideal back-up to Fabinho at Anfield. Therefore, Klopp should think about trying everything they can to secure his services during the summer transfer period.
