In a recent report, The Daily Mirror claimed that Liverpool are long-term admirers of Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella. It has been mentioned that the Reds have a long-standing interest in the Italian midfield ace after scouting him during his time at Cagliari.
Barella’s Excellent Form At San Siro Last Season
Barella enjoyed a productive campaign with Inter recently as he managed to perform at a high level for them at the centre of the park. The Italian playmaker deserves a lot of credit for finding the back of the net on four occasions and picking up 13 assists in 47 matches for the Italian club in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The 25-year-old gave a good account of himself by averaging 1.8 tackles, 1.9 shots, 1.8 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A. He was even accurate when distributing possession from midfield, based on his pass completion rate of 85.1% in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
Barella’s current contract with Inter is set to expire in the summer of 2026. Hence, it won’t be easy for Liverpool to arrange a move to bring him to Anfield this summer.
Should Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp Move In For Barella This Summer?
Barella can get stuck in with a few solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition at the centre of the park. He can strike the ball well from long range and can orchestrate a few promising chances for his teammates in the opponent’s half.
The Italian sensation can even make some intelligent runs with the ball from midfield and hardly gives away possession cheaply in the final third. However, it remains to be seen whether Barella has what it takes to maintain his good form in Premier League football if Liverpool decide to seal a move for him this summer.
Jurgen Klopp can definitely benefit from recruiting a new midfielder this summer if he wants to cope with Thiago Alcantara’s injury absence in the coming weeks.
Therefore, Barella fits the bill perfectly as he is good enough to become a regular starter at Anfield over the next few years. At 25, the Italian’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a good choice for the Reds to pursue this month. All in all, Klopp should think about moving in for Barella before the end of this transfer window if he wants to have enough depth in his midfield for another title charge in the Premier League this season.
