Newcastle United faced off against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park earlier tonight as they hoped to pick up a win and book a place in the third round of the EFL Cup. The Magpies made a slow start to the game and conceded the opening goal in the 21st minute when Elliott Nevitt scored for the home team. However, Eddie Howe’s men equalised just 19 minutes later via Jamaal Lascelles’ goal. Both teams went into the half-time break with a 1-1 scoreline.
Chris Wood gave Newcastle the lead in the 52nd minute as the Magpies defended their narrow advantage well and earned a 2-1 win on the road.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle player fared during the match against Tranmere.

Darlow made a couple of good saves but failed to keep a clean sheet tonight.
RB: Emil Krafth – 6/10
He made one good chance in the final third but had to be substituted in the 38th minute.

Lascelles was a dominant force in the air and scored the all-important equaliser for Newcastle in the 40th minute.
CB: Paul Dummett – 6.5/10
He made a lot of crucial clearances on the defensive end of the field. He was even accurate with his passing.
LB: Matt Targett – 6.5/10
He worked hard defensively and made a decent run down the left flank. He got replaced at half-time.
CM: Joe Willock – 6.5/10
The English midfielder was a real threat in the opposition half but failed to find the back of the net.
CM: Sean Longstaff – 6/10
Longstaff struggled to get into the rhythm of the game at times but engineered two key chances going forward.
CM: Elliot Anderson – 7/10
He caused a lot of problems for the Tranmere defenders but was not shy of having a crack at goal.
RW: Matt Ritchie – 7/10
Ritchie worked hard defensively and had a few lively moments in the game.
ST: Chris Wood – 7.5/10
The English striker scored the only goal of the second half which was enough to give Newcastle the win. He was mostly quiet, otherwise.
LW: Jacob Murphy – 6/10
He was not afraid to shoot but didn’t get much joy on the attacking end of the field.
Substitutes:
RB: Kieran Trippier – 8/10
Trippier created a lot of decent chances for his teammates and did his fair share of defending as well.
LB: Jamal Lewis – 6/10
He had a quiet game in the second half.
CB: Sven Botman – 6.5/10
Botman cleared the danger when the opposition were on the offensive.
CM: Joelinton – 6/10
The Brazilian talent added more energy to Newcastle’s midfield.
CM: Bruno Guimaraes – N/A
Guimaraes hardly had any time to make an impact.
