Liverpool welcomed Newcastle United at Anfield earlier tonight as they hoped to earn maximum points at home. The Reds made a slow start to the game and conceded the opening goal in the 38th minute when Alexander Isak scored with a clinical finish. The Merseyside club went into the half-time break 1-0 down on the scoreline.
Jurgen Klopp’s men equalised in the 61st minute when Roberto Firmino found the back of the net with a controlled finish. Liverpool pushed on in search of the winner and finally scored their second goal in injury-time when Fabio Carvalho scored a dramatic, last-gasp goal from close range. The contest ended with the Reds earning a wonderful 2-1 victory at Anfield.
Let’s take a look at how each Liverpool player performed during the match against the Magpies.
GK: Alisson Becker – 6.5/10
The Brazilian keeper made one good save in the game but couldn’t do much about Alexander Isak’s finish in the first half.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6.5/10
The English full-back played some decent crosses during the game but was guilty of throwing away possession a few times during his time on the field.
CB: Joe Gomez – 7/10
Gomez dealt with mostly everything that came his way and was good on the ball as well.
CB: Virgil Van Dijk – 6.5/10
Van Dijk was strong at the back and organised his backline well after conceding the opener in the 38th minute.
LB: Andrew Robertson – 6/10
Robertson was way below his usual standards today. He was still adventurous with his runs and got himself into some promising areas in the final third.
CM: Harvey Elliott – 8/10
The talented youngster was always willing to get on the ball and set up a few decent plays for others around him.
CM: Fabinho – 6/10
The Brazilian midfield ace gave away too many cheap fouls and didn’t have his shooting boots on from long range.
CM: Jordan Henderson – 6/10
The Liverpool captain slowed the tempo of the game at times. He ran out of gas and got replaced in the second half.
RW: Mohamed Salah – 7/10
Salah was always willing to run in behind the opponent’s backline but lacked the cutting edge in front of the Newcastle goal.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 7.5/10
He had a quiet game in the first half but popped up the all-important equaliser after the hour mark with a great finish.
LW: Luis Diaz – 7/10
Diaz caused all kinds of problems for Kieran Trippier but there was no goal for him today.
Substitutes:
CM: Fabio Carvalho – 7.5/10
He was Klopp’s super sub off the bench as he went on to score the winning goal in injure-time
RB: James Milner – 6/10
Milner struggled to retain possession of the ball down the right flank.
LB: Kostas Tsimikas – 6/10
Tsimikas showed some signs of promise but lacked quality in the final third.
