In a recent report from Daily Express, it was mentioned that Chelsea have been advised to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford. It is understood that the Blues are hoping to land Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as they remain in dire need of a striker following Romelu Lukaku’s loan exit from Stamford bridge but Adebayo Akinfenwa believes Toney could be a perfect long-term option for the Blues.
Toney’s Impressive Campaign For Brentford Last Season
Toney has had a solid campaign for Brentford as he displayed some impressive performances in the final third. He banged in 12 goals and created 6 assists over 35 appearances across all fronts.
The Northampton-born talent has performed consistently for the Bees last season after averaging 2.7 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he was poor in distributing the ball after only completing 58.9% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Should Tuchel Bring Him To Chelsea?
The Blues need a striker to fill in the boots of Romelu Lukaku who has left Stamford Bridge on loan. The recent additions to the squad this summer do not include an out-and-out striker which Thomas Tuchel desperately requires in his starting XI. Chelsea have identified Aubameyang as a decent replacement in that position since Tuchel has known him since their time at Borrusia Dortmund.
However, at 33, he would only be a short-term solution for a couple of years which points them towards Ivan Toney who can be a better alternative as he has the knack for finding the back of the net and can even set up his teammates in front of the goal. The 26-year-old has the potential to become a fearsome striker and also has room for improvement over the coming years.
The Blues’ Boss should bring him to Stamford Bridge as he remains a cheaper and long-term alternative to the Barcelona striker. His arrival would definitely add more firepower to Tuchel’s attack and he could even help the West London club to challenge for the title this season.
