According to Football.London Chelsea are reportedly in talks with Leicester City for acquiring Wesley Fofana before they clash with the Foxes in their next fixture. It is understood that Thomas Tuchel requires immediate defensive reinforcement after a disappointing 3-0 loss to Leeds United in their last fixture, which has forced them to intensify their talks with Leicester City even after seeing an offer of €75m being rejected earlier this summer.
Fofana’s Injury-Plagued Campaign For The Foxes Last Season
Fofana had a major injury setback due to which he missed out on a majority of games in his last campaign. He ended up making only 12 appearances for the Foxes last season, finding the back of the net on only one occasion across all competitions.
The French talent made the most out of his appearances and deserves a lot of credit for averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 3.7 clearances per game in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back after completing 89% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Should Tuchel Bring Him To Chelsea?
Fofana has a solid presence in the backline as he can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his side. The French defender is usually quick to sense the danger and doesn’t mind putting his foot into a tackle.
Standing at 1.90 meters, the French youngster can easily dominate his opponents in the air and remains proficient at playing his way out from the back. However, he would need to avoid long injury spells to get back to playing at a high level.
At 21, Fofana has the potential to become one of the most fearsome defenders over the coming years. Therefore, the Blues have done well to identify him and keep the pursuit going despite seeing their initial offer being rejected.
Thomas Tuchel should make a revised bid to the Foxes to acquire him before game week four. Kalidou Koulibaly is taking time to settle into English football while Trevor Chalobah looks to make an exit from Stamford Bridge this season; thus, Fofana would make a brilliant signing.
