In a recent report, Sport mentioned that Barcelona are open to cashing in on Sergino Dest this summer. It has been claimed that the Catalan club are keen on selling the United States defender before the end of this transfer window.
Dest’s Season Of Mixed Emotions At Barcelona
Dest had an up and down season at the Nou Camp as he struggled to be consistent with his performances on the right side of Barca’s defence. The 21-year-old picked up three assists in 31 matches for the Catalan club in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The Almere-born talent deserves some praise for averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.8 clearances, 0.9 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He was even accurate when distributing possession from the right flank after making 92.4% of his attempted passes in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
Dest’s current contract with the Catalan club is set to run out in the summer of 2025. However, he is not guaranteed regular playing minutes in Xavi’s first team, so it would be wise for him to opt for a change of scenery this summer.
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Cut Dest Loose This Summer?
Dest is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger quickly which helps him clear his lines when needed. He has got the vision to create some decent plays for his teammates in the final third and can complete some powerful dribbles with the ball down the right flank. However, Dest has to find a way to improve his productivity in the attacking end of the field if he wants to taste more success at the highest level.
The United States international mainly operates as a right-back but can also play as a left-back or operate as a winger on either flank if required.
However, Xavi doesn’t have the luxury to offer him regular playing opportunities at the Nou Camp this season as he has also got Sergi Roberto and Ronald Araujo fighting for a right-back spot in his first XI. Therefore, it is only fair to the player if the Barcelona head coach decides to cut him loose before the end of this summer transfer window.
At 21, Dest still has a bright future ahead of him and could benefit from a change of scenery in search of greener pastures. Barca can also lower their wage bill if they manage to sell the Unites States sensation this month.
