Aston Villa welcomed West Ham United at Villa Park earlier today as they hoped to secure a victory in front of their home fans. The Villans made a decent start to the game but failed to be clinical in the final third as they went into the half-time break with a goalless scoreline.
The West Midlands outfit ran out of ideas in the second half and conceded the opening goal in the 74th minute when Pablo Fornals scored with a decent strike. The Villans failed to come up with a response and crashed to a poor 1-0 loss at home.
Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player fared during the match against the Hammers.
GK: Emiliano Martinez – 6.5/10
Martinez made one good save during the game but will be disappointed after conceding a goal late in the match.
RB: Matty Cash – 7/10
He gave a good account of himself on the defensive end of the pitch but lacked quality in the opponent’s half.
CB: Ezri Konsa – 7/10
Konsa kept things solid at the back for most of the game but was unfortunate to see Fornals’ shot flick off him and go into the back of his own net.
CB: Calum Chambers – 6.5/10
He did his fair share of defending but won’t be pleased after conceding in the 74th minute.
LB: Lucas Digne – 6.5/10
Digne looked vulnerable at times inside his half but managed to create a few decent chances in the final third.
CM: Douglas Luiz – 6/10
The Brazilian talent earned the ball back a couple of times but could last only 65 minutes.
CM: Boubacar Kamara – 6.5/10
The Frenchman anchored the midfield well and made one key chance going forward.
CM: John McGinn – 6.5/10
McGinn got stuck in with some solid tackles but lacked quality in the final third.
CAM: Philippe Coutinho – 6.5/10
The Brazilian sensation made two decent chances in the West Ham half but ran out of gas and got replaced after the hour mark.
ST: Ollie Watkins – 6.5/10
He worked hard and came back to defend when needed. However, there was no goal for him today.
ST: Danny Ings – 6/10
Ings made one good run with the ball but hardly got a sniff at goal.
Substitutes:
CM: Jacob Ramsey – 6/10
He added more energy to Steven Gerrard’s midfield.
CAM: Emiliano Buendia – 6.5/10
Buendia had a couple of bright moments in the final third.
RW: Leon Bailey – 6/10
He was always willing to dribble with the ball but was wasteful inside the opponent’s penalty area.
ST: Cameron Archer – N/A
Archer was Gerrard’s last throw of the dice.
