In a recent report, Bild (subscription required) stated that Aston Villa are among clubs trying to sign Red Bull Leipzig talent Emil Forsberg this summer. It has been claimed that the Villans are showing interest in recruiting the Swedish winger.
Forsberg’s Decent Run Of Form In German Football Last Season
Forsberg had a fruitful campaign at the Red Bull Arena as he managed to produce a series of eye-catching performances on the left side of Leipzig’s attack. The Swedish sensation found the back of the net on 11 occasions and earned four assists in 46 matches for the German club last season in all competitions.
The 30-year-old has been a consistent performer in the final third after he averaged 1.4 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.7 key passes per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He even took care of the ball well when distributing possession in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 84.3% in the top tier of German football (stats via whoscored).
Forsberg’s current deal with Leipzig expires in the summer of 2025, so it won’t be easy for the Villans to sign him during this summer transfer period.
Is Forsberg A Good Fit For Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard?
Forsberg can strike the ball with power and precision from long range and can make a few driving runs with the ball down the left flank when he is playing well on the field.
The Swedish talent has got the eye to play a decisive pass in the final third but needs to be a bit more consistent with his offensive contributions.
Still, there is no denying that the Villans can benefit from recruiting someone of Forsberg’s skillset as they need to add more quality to their attacking department. At 30, he might still have a few good years left in his tank to play at a high level. However, there are some concerns over whether Forsberg is good enough to make a smooth transition to life in English football.
The Leipzig star will undoubtedly strengthen Steven Gerrard‘s starting XI and could give the West Midlands club more width out on the flanks. He is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also fill in as a centre-forward or as a right-winger if required.
Hence, Forsberg will give Gerrard more options on the attacking third of the pitch. All in all, he will be a good, short-term fit for Aston Villa this summer.
